Apple continues to withdraw from China plans India: must be locally processed, non-Chinese

Reuters on February 18, citing a number of Indian government and industry sources disclosed that the U.S. electronics giant Apple Inc. continues to improve its smartphone iPhone production in India to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing, while trying to participate in a new plan to promote the export of Indian computer products, including the assembly of its tablet computer iPad in India.

It is reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create jobs, last year launched a $6.7 billion electronics manufacturing export promotion program. Multiple sources “closely involved” in drafting the plan told Reuters that the Indian government is now preparing to announce another set of incentives to promote local production of information technology products, including tablets, laptops, and servers and so on. Apple is involved in the plan through its contract manufacturers.

The report quoted a government official as disclosing that the Indian government has asked Apple that the tablet computer iPad must be assembled by local Indian foundries, “not by Chinese companies.
