The Breitbart News reported this week that internal emails show that Biden‘s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is blocking the use of terms such as “illegal alien” and “assimilation.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officials sent internal emails asking staff to stop using the terms “illegal alien,” “alien” and “assimilation” when referring to federal immigration law, according to Axios.
The order was issued in the form of a memorandum signed by Acting USCIS Director Tracy Renaud, in which Renaud encouraged staff to “use more inclusive language in outreach efforts, internal documents, and overall communications with stakeholders, partners, and the public.
Instead of using the term “illegal alien” to describe people who are in the U.S. illegally, Reynolds instructed staff to use less descriptive terms such as “undocumented noncitizen” and “undocumented individual. Similarly, staff were told not to use the term “assimilation” but to use “integration” or “civic integration.
Reynolds also asked staff to refer to foreign nationals applying for green cards and seeking permanent residency in the United States as “customers. This term implies that USCIS is selling U.S. residency because the agency’s budget depends on the cost of visa and green card applications.
The internal policy change at the Department of Homeland Security comes as a group of House Democrats, led by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Calif.), have introduced legislation to eliminate the use of the terms “illegal alien” and “alien” to describe foreign nationals and people who are in the United States illegally.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have also been ordered by Deputy Homeland Security officials to stop using the term “illegal immigrant.
