Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., whose mother died Feb. 14 after contracting the COVID-19 virus, also made the news public on Twitter on Tuesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of our mother, Ms. Pauline Bowman (D-CA). Her battle with the COVID-19 virus lasted for weeks and finally ended on Valentine’s Day.” Bowman said, “Our mother raised us to live our lives, filled with love and joy for each other. I share her (spiritual) legacy with all of you.”
Several members of Congress expressed their condolences.
“I’m so sorry for your loss (of a loved one).” Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., wrote on Twitter.
“No, no! I am so sorry, JB. losing a parent is so hard. Sending love and strength to you and I’m here for you.” Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) wrote on Twitter.
Bowman’s campaign website said, “He grew up in a Family that was not wealthy, but his mother provided everything he needed: love, a stable family and a sense of belonging.”
Other members of Congress have lost loved ones to the CCP virus, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-CA). The CCP virus, also known as New Coronavirus and Wuhan pneumonia, causes COVID-19 disease.
Bowman was first elected to the House of Representatives to represent New York State’s 16th Congressional District. The district includes the Bronx, Yonkers, New Rochelle and Scarsdale.
Bowman is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a group that includes Rep. Tlaib, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Rep. (AOC). Prior to running for Congress, Bowman served as the founding principal of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action Middle School (CASA) in the Bronx.
According to GovTrack, at least 71 members of the House and Senate have been diagnosed with the Chinese Communist virus.
Rep. Ron Wright (R-WI) died from the CCP virus on Feb. 7. Rep. Luke Letlow (R-Louisiana), a Republican-elect, died of a heart attack on Dec. 29, 2020, after contracting COVID-19.
Reps. Stephen Lynch (D-La.) and Lori Trahan (D-N.Y.) tested positive for the virus in late January.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 488,000 people have died from the CDC virus in the United States.
