In a recent media interview, Biden warned that the Chinese Communist Party will pay the price for human rights violations. He also said that Xi Jinping himself knows this.
On Feb. 16, Biden spoke about human rights violations by the Chinese Communist Party during a town hall meeting broadcast on CNN.
Biden said the Chinese Communist Party will inevitably pay the price for its human rights violations, and Xi Jinping knows it. “China (the Communist Party) will suffer a lot of evil consequences, and he knows that.”
He reiterated that the U.S. will stand firm on its role in upholding human rights and work with the international community to demand that the CCP uphold human rights.
He added, “China (the Communist Party) is trying very hard to be a world leader, and to get that title and to do that, you have to earn the confidence of other countries.” It will be difficult to do that if the CCP continues to violate basic human rights.
Biden spoke with Chinese Communist Party President Xi Jinping on New Year’s Eve, Feb. 11, in a two-hour call. Biden reiterated that he would continue to keep the Indo-Pacific region free and open. He also expressed concern about Beijing‘s coercive and unfair economic practices, its crackdown in Hong Kong, its human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and its strong-arm actions against Taiwan.
However, reports in the official Chinese Communist Party media said that Xi Jinping said that the issues of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang are the internal affairs of the Communist Party and that the U.S. side should act with caution.
It is worth noting that Biden had made a rare criticism of Xi’s lack of democratic consciousness prior to his call with Xi.
In a rare interview with CBS on Feb. 7, Biden used a Western proverb to describe Xi as having “no democratic bone in his body.
He (Xi Jinping) is very smart and very strong,” Biden said. I’m not criticizing, but describing the fact that he has no sense of democracy in his bones.”
Speaking about U.S. policy toward China, Biden said there is no reason for the United States and the Chinese Communist Party to get involved in a war, but the two superpowers are likely to collide economically in the coming years.
Tang Hao, a veteran media personality and host of “Crossroads,” believes that the Biden Administration may maintain a relatively tough stance toward the CCP that is “softer than Trump and harder than Obama” for the Time being.
