U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned Sunday (Feb. 14) that the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump (R-Texas) for allegedly inciting riots in Congress “opens Pandora’s Box.” Republicans could also move to impeach Vice President Kamala Harris (D-N.Y.).
Graham is a Republican congressional senator from South Carolina. After the Senate voted 57 to 43 on Saturday to acquit Trump, Graham said on “Sunday Fox News” that Vice President Kamala Harris’ call for donations to bail out violent protesters who were jailed last summer could expose her to the same charges.
Graham said, “If that model is used, I don’t know how Hejinli would not be impeached if Republicans took over the House of Representatives?”
“Because she actually provided relief to rioters, one of whom went back out into the street and broke somebody’s head. So we’ve opened Pandora’s Box here.”
Hejinli tweeted last June, “Join @MNFreedomFund (Minnesota Freedom Fund) immediately if you can to help bail out Minnesota protesters.”
The Minnesota Freedom Fund, is being used to secure relief for some convicted violent criminals, as well as protesters who rallied against Minneapolis police officers in the death of George Floyd last summer.
Among those rescued by the fund were a suspect who shot at police, a twice-convicted sex offender and a woman accused of killing a friend, Fox News found.
Graham had talked about the possibility of impeaching He Jinli in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity earlier this month, when he tried to dissuade Democrats from calling witnesses in Trump’s impeachment case, noting that it would prolong the proceedings and implicate He Jinli.
Graham said, “If you’re going to pursue this and want to start calling witnesses and want to drag this out, it’s only fair to play the tape of He Jinli calling for people (violent protesters) to be rescued from prison.”
Graham added, “What else can you do to incite future violence other than to bail out those who incited the trashing of stores and the beating of police officers.” “And how is that not inciting future violence? Please be mindful of what you expect from your Democratic colleagues, please be mindful of what you expect.”
During the impeachment trial, Trump’s legal team played a series of videos showing many Democrats, including He Jinli, urging supporters to “fight.”
“What happened on Jan. 6 (at the Capitol) was horrible for America. But he (Trump) is not the only one to blame.” Graham said, “Democrats sat on the sidelines and watched this country burn for a year and a half without saying a word, and most Republicans are tired of the hypocrisy.”
