The latest research shows that mothers do not transmit the virus to their newborns through breast milk, but instead deliver antibodies that “neutralize” the virus to their babies.
In a recent report published in the American Society for Microbiology journal “mBio”, researchers at the University of Idaho analyzed 18 mothers diagnosed with martial lung and their breast milk samples and found that all samples were free of martial lung virus and nearly two-thirds of them had two antibodies specific to the disease.
The report shows that breastfeeding is quite safe for the infant and even beneficial for the child, even if the mother is infected with Wuhan pneumonia.
The research team is now preparing to expand the study to 50 confirmed women and will continue to track progress in the coming months to update the medical advice issued to the public as appropriate.
