WTO appoints Iweala as Director General, first African woman at the helm

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian, was named director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) today. This is the first woman and person from Africa to head the world trade body.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria was appointed on Monday as the first woman and African to head the World Trade Organization (WTO), AFP reported today from Geneva.

According to a WTO announcement, “WTO members have just agreed to appoint Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next Director-General of the WTO.

According to the announcement, the decision was taken by consensus at a special meeting of the WTO General Council held today.”

The WTO meeting was opened about 15 minutes after the agreement was reached to make the announcement as above.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian who has just taken office as the new director general of the WTO, issued his first documentary announcement today calling for the relaunch of the WTO’s mechanisms and operations and saying that the organization is “strong” to work together to overcome the New coronavirus outbreak in order to revive the global economy.
