Bundesliga club Bayern Munich posted a number of posts on its official Facebook page on Friday (12), congratulating a number of Asian countries on a happy Lunar New Year in several languages and attaching the corresponding national flags to the messages. However, one of the posts was written in simplified Chinese characters, “Happy New Year”, and the Taiwanese version was accompanied by a “blue sky, white sun and red earth” flag. The post quickly disappeared from Bayern Munich’s official Facebook page, and Bayern Munich issued a statement on its official Weibo account on Sunday (14), apologizing for sending the Taiwanese flag in the New Year’s post. The message did not mention whether Bayern had been protested.
According to Ming Pao’s report today, Bayern’s facebook post in simplified Chinese characters apologized for posting a red flag in the blue sky and white sun.
The post quickly disappeared from Bayern Munich’s official facebook, and Bayern Munich issued a statement on Sunday (14) on its official microblogging site, apologizing for sending out the Taiwanese flag for the New Year post.
According to Bayern in the statement, the operator hired by the ball club posted unacceptable content on the club’s official facebook page without communication. “Many people have been emotionally hurt by this and for that we apologize.” The statement added, “We will take stock of the mistakes made, deal with them seriously and learn from them in the future.”
The report said Bayern Munich also responded to the incident to mainland Chinese media, saying the club immediately realized that this was a very serious and unacceptable mistake and had removed the posting at the first opportunity.
The message did not mention how the Bayern team thanked the Taiwanese fans after deleting the Taiwanese version of the greeting.
