The government of Canyuan Wa Autonomous County in Lincang City, Yunnan Province, said that a fire broke out in the old cottage of Wengding Village in Mangjiao National Township on Feb. 14, according to the mainland media. After an all-out effort to put out the fire, the fire has been initially controlled and there were no casualties. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
This old cottage is mainly inhabited by Wa villagers, and the surrounding areas are populated by Dai, Yi and Lahu ethnic minorities with a history of more than 400 years. Before 1949, they were still at the end of the primitive society, living a slash-and-burn Life. It is still called “the last primitive tribe in China, and is the best-preserved original Wa village in China.
