Bundesliga Bayern Munich mistakenly uses Taiwan flag to pay New Year’s greetings to mainland fans

An official Facebook post of German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich to pay New Year’s greetings to mainland fans has been heavily criticized by mainland netizens for misusing the Taiwanese flag.

On Friday (12), the first day of the Chinese New Year, German Bundesliga soccer club Bayern Munich paid tribute to Chinese fans in different regions of Asia on Facebook in several languages, but in a posting with the words “Happy New Year” in simplified Chinese characters, it was accompanied by a red flag on a green sky and white sun, causing discontent among mainland fans. The club replied to the mainland media the following afternoon, saying it immediately realized that this was a very serious and unacceptable mistake and deleted the posting at once.

The club said the Facebook account was operated by a third-party company, which was responsible for posting the text after the club decided on a photo of the New Year’s poster. However, due to the mistake of the third-party company, the wrong banner was used to pay tribute to mainland fans. The club also issued a statement on its official Weibo account on Sunday (14), apologizing to the many people who were emotionally hurt by the incident and stressing that the club has always attached great importance to cultural exchanges between the mainland and Germany, and that it would take stock of the mistake made this Time and deal with it seriously, and take it as a warning in its future work.

This is not the first time that the club has caused controversy by posting on social networks. In late 2019, the club made photos with the five-star flag and the blue sky and white sun flag to thank fans on both sides of the Taiwan Strait for their support and uploaded them on Facebook, but the posts were deleted afterwards.
