Democrats may invoke constitutional amendment to block Trump from holding public office if impeachment fails

U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer speaks to the media in the Senate reception room on Feb. 10, 2021.

Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has hinted that if the Senate impeachment trial fails to convict former President Trump (Trump), Democrats may consider invoking the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to pass legislation banning Trump from holding any future federal government office.

According to Fox News, Democratic senators have been discussing the possibility of invoking the 14th Amendment if the impeachment trial fails to convict Trump, in order to prevent him from holding any future federal office.

At a press conference held on Feb. 11, a member of the media asked a related question, to which Schumer replied, “We’re going to finish the impeachment trial first, and then the Democrats will get together and decide where to go next.”

U.S. media believe that Schumer’s response is a hint that it is tantamount to “opening the door” for the Democrats to invoke the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that “no person engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the government of the United States shall hold any public office. The amendment expressly states that Congress “shall have power to pass appropriate legislation to carry out the provisions of this article.

The Hill reported on Jan. 22 that Democrats are considering whether the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution could be invoked to bar Trump from holding public office again.

The impeachment case launched by the Democratic Party against Trump is coming to an end. House impeachment managers completed their briefs Thursday. Next, Trump’s legal team has up to 16 hours on Friday and Saturday to make their defense case before the case goes to a final vote.

News that Democrats may borrow the 14th Amendment to deny Trump the right to hold federal office in the future has sparked widespread controversy in the U.S. community. Under the related reports on Chinese websites, many Chinese netizens have also left comments, most of them criticizing the Democrats’ actions.
