Melissa DeRosa, secretary to New York Governor Cuomo, recently apologized to lawmakers of the same party at an internal meeting of the state Democratic Party for refusing to disclose the true number of deaths in nursing homes across the state last year, the New York Post exclusively reported on 11 November. After that incident came to light, New York State Republicans intend to sue and impeach Governor Cuomo and other state officials.
The governor’s office has not yet publicly responded to the New York Post’s report. The Epoch Times has contacted the governor’s office for a response.
In a statement, New York Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik said, “Governor Cuomo, the secretary of state and his team must be immediately prosecuted by the New York State Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice.”
Stefanik went on to write in the statement that “the secretary’s remarks are a bombshell of a cover-up that demonstrates that intentionally blocking any federal investigation is an egregious abuse of power” and that “the families of the lost loved ones, New Yorkers and all Americans deserve a response from the U.S. Department of Justice. The Department of Justice must operate independently and not be swayed by political pressure from the governor.”
Republicans want to prosecute and impeach Governor Cuomo after New York’s Secretary of State exposed the inside story of the state’s deliberate cover-up of nursing Home deaths. Pictured is an elderly New Yorker waiting for a vaccination.
De Rosa told Democratic lawmakers that Gov. Cuomo’s refusal to release the numbers to the state Legislature last year came at a Time when former President Trump “was going to turn the nursing home crisis into a giant political football,” according to the New York Post, which has access to archives of the governor’s secretary’s remarks.
He (Trump) started tweeting that we kill everybody in nursing homes; he started going after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer,” De Rosa said. “
De Rosa then mentioned on the conference call that Trump directed “the Justice Department to investigate us,” adding, “Basically, we froze (the death toll).”
New York Republican Party Chairman Nick Langworthy criticized the Cuomo administration for covering up the facts. “The second most powerful figure in the state capital, the governor’s top aide, admitted in a video to a deliberate violation of state law that clearly constitutes obstruction of justice,” he said in a statement on Thursday (11), adding that “Cuomo’s abuse of power has undermined (people’s) trust in the governor’s office, and prosecution and impeachment Discussions must begin immediately.”
New York Congressman Andrew Garbarino (D-NY) also said, “The Justice Department needs to conduct a full investigation to seek ‘answers and justice’ for the Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing homes and COVID-19 (during the outbreak). ” He noted that “not only did Cuomo recklessly put New York’s seniors in harm’s way, he and the administration he led have admitted to hiding the facts from the Justice Department.” “This, like the refusal to honor several Freedom of Information Act requests, turned a policy misjudgment into what may be one of the largest criminal cover-ups in New York’s history.”
According to the report, there are more than 600 nursing homes (Nursing Homes) in New York State, with a total of more than 100,000 seniors living in them. According to the state Department of health, at least 5,000 nursing home residents died during the outbreak last year.
However, agencies continue to question New York State’s official numbers. New York State Attorney General Letitia James reported in a January 28 release that the state Department of Health may have underestimated the number of deaths in New York nursing homes from COVID-19 (the Chinese Communist virus) by about 50 percent.
It is widely believed that a nursing home admissions policy issued by New York Governor Cuomo on March 25 of last year directly contributed to the high death rate in nursing homes. Cuomo’s policy requires that nursing homes may not refuse to admit patients with the CCHD virus, regardless of the capacity of the nursing home and other factors.
