Florida travel restrictions by Biden? Governor strongly opposed to say unconstitutional

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

In response to reports that the Biden administration may impose domestic travel restrictions on Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis denounced the idea as “unconstitutional” and a political persecution of Floridians.

The Miami Herald reported Wednesday that the Biden Administration is considering whether to restrict domestic travel to areas including Florida in order to stop the spread of the British variant of the virus.

“I think it’s a ridiculous report, it’s unconstitutional, it’s unwise and it’s unjust.” DeSantis said at a news conference Thursday (Feb. 11).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said they are monitoring the mutated Chinese communist virus known as B.1.1.7 (New Coronavirus), which was first discovered by British scientists and has recently been prevalent and spreading in Florida and California, where it already accounts for more than a third of all cases in the United States.

DeSantis added that he is not sure why the Biden administration has made restricting travel to Florida its main goal, knowing that the administration faces numerous other tasks, such as other states with outbreaks worse than Florida and the southern border allowing illegal immigrants to enter.

“If you consider that Americans are being restricted in their freedom to travel domestically while (the administration) allows illegal immigrants to enter the southern border undisturbed, it’s an absurd practice, a very harmful farce.” He said.

DeSantis told reporters he opposes any travel restrictions on Florida, which has done a better job of containing the virus than many other states, in terms of mortality and vaccination rates.

“So we’re going to be 100 percent against (this policy).” “It’s not based on science (to make the policy), it’s based purely on a political attack on the people of Florida.” He said.

After DeSantis’ news conference, White House press secretary Jen Psaki addressed the reports of domestic travel restrictions during her daily briefing Thursday.

“We’ve been considering what steps to take to ensure the safety of the American people, but we have not …… made public health decisions or issued other domestic travel advisories that could delay or alter Family travel at this Time.” Psaki said.

On Wednesday, Florida Senator Rubio sent a letter to Biden specifically on the matter, “Creating a travel ban between states, or restricting movement between states, is an outrageous, authoritarian move that is not based on any legal or scientific basis. Instead, it will only add to an already damaged economy.”

Rubio wants Biden to help citizens get vaccines as soon as possible, rather than creating draconian travel restrictions between states, “The government should be increasing the availability of vaccines, not instructing Americans whether they can travel, especially to Florida, the third most densely populated, winter destination.”
