China’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala made its usual appearance on New Year’s Eve of the Chinese New Year. However, the content of the program is strongly political and has sparked discontent among netizens.
The annual Chinese Central Television Spring Festival Gala once again disappointed the audience. Many netizens have gone from complaining that the Spring Festival Gala is full of political overtones in previous years to striking the gala.
Some netizens commented that the Spring Festival Gala program is “a cover-up to hide the flaws of the system” and “an insult to the intelligence of normal people. Even some pinkos, who usually sing the government’s praises, left a message online: “This year’s Spring Festival Gala is not good.”
Chengdu rights activist Huang Xiaomin, who was queried by the station on the first day of the first month of the Ox (Feb. 12), said he had long been uninterested in the Spring Festival Gala, and that none of his friends and five relatives and Family members around him had watched it, and there seemed to be no such thing as the Spring Festival Gala.
Ms. Liu, a resident of Shenyang, said she has not watched the CCTV Spring Festival Gala for more than two decades. She said: “I do not watch the Spring Festival Gala every year, more than twenty years do not watch the Spring Festival Gala, there is no point, nothing is true. There is no happiness, only fear, when it comes to people’s happiness. The content of the so-called Spring Festival Gala is a false image, the real side is that no one dares to speak the truth.”
Political overtones of the public strike the “Spring Festival Gala”
This year’s Spring Festival Gala had more than 30 programs to celebrate the happy and fulfilling lives of the people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The programs include poverty alleviation, ethnic harmony, and asking people to “listen to the Party and follow the Party”. In response, Mr. Lin from Fujian said to the station, “China has created a false prosperity and a pompous world. I haven’t watched the Spring Festival Gala for years.”
Ms. Sun, a Beijing resident, told the station, “I haven’t watched the Spring Festival Gala for more than 30 years, and it’s torture for me. The Spring Festival Gala has become more and more a means of official self-indulgence. In its earliest days, the Spring Festival Gala was very popular with the Chinese people because of the satirical and humorous comic strips. But later on, the comedies are not even satirical, but only glorifying (the government). Anyway, I can’t watch it.”
Nearly four decades of “Spring Festival Gala” gradually metamorphosis
Speaking of the nearly 40-year history of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, Jiangsu rights activist Zhang Jianping told the station that China’s “reform and opening up” in the 1980s, the Spring Festival Gala did have a great impact on the people: “But as the times progressed, we did not see any progress in this gala, and slowly became disgusted. After the new era, the party Culture brought us a great deal of disgust, so I rarely watched the gala afterwards. At that Time there was still a relaxed environment, but today there is still such a relaxed environment? To put it mildly, some shows are really an insult to one’s intelligence.”
Born in China’s “reform and opening up” era, the commander, who graduated from Shandong University, said his overall assessment of the Spring Festival Gala was that there was nothing new. He said, “A large part of the show is related to many things that happened in China back then, giving the audience an implicit brainwashing effect and promoting the so-called brilliant achievements of the Chinese government in the past year. For example, reporting to the motherland on the return of national treasures (cultural relics), etc. It promotes these achievements of China in the past year. For example, the New Crown (CCP virus) Epidemic became its political achievement in the past year, giving the people a strong dose of nationalism.”
Spring Festival Gala Highlights Full Left Turn in Public Opinion Situation
The commander said the authorities are using the Spring Festival Gala to promote the Chinese Communist Party‘s ideology to the nation: “I believe there are many people in the audience, including comments from netizens, and many of them have very strong opinions. On Weibo as well as in the comment section of CCTV’s website, it says that this year’s comments just don’t even have the chance to casually comment on the Spring Festival Gala.”
Mr. Qin, a Hebei-based scholar of literature and history, told the station that the Spring Festival Gala program is a vane of Chinese society and politics, and that the Spring Festival Gala program reflects the social atmosphere this year. He believes that China’s reform and opening up has become history: “The whole current situation is moving in the left direction, the public opinion situation is turning to the left, and the Spring Festival Gala program must become a representative of the left.”
