White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday, Feb. 11, that the Biden administration is considering further measures to ensure the safety of the American people in response to the coronavirus (Chinese Communist virus) outbreak, and hinted that a domestic travel ban is being considered. In response, Ilya Shapiro, a constitutional scholar at the Cato Institute, said the travel ban is unconstitutional and that the White House would be declaring war on the states if it did so.
The White House has not made any new decisions about the outbreak regarding domestic travel patterns, or other public health measures,” Psaki said at a White House briefing Thursday …… But we have been considering what steps to take to ensure the safety of the American people.”
She also mentioned that the White House would not oppose state travel restrictions adopted by Florida, California or any other state to interrupt the spread of the variant of the new coronavirus.
The Miami Herald reported Feb. 11 that the White House is considering embargo measures in response to the growing spread of variant coronaviruses in Florida, California and other states, and that “the White House’s focus on travel restrictions has intensified.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), however, said he would not restrict travel. He argued that restrictions on domestic travel are unconstitutional, unwise and unjust.
“We will oppose (the travel ban) 100 percent,” DeSantis said. “Any attempt to restrict or block Florida from the federal government is purely politically motivated and is an attack on our state.”
Shapiro supports DeSantis’ position. He believes that a domestic travel ban, a year after the (Communist) virus has spread across the country, is a “declaration of war on the states. He argued that Florida is not a hotspot for the spread of the CCP virus compared to other states, so there is absolutely no reason to impose a travel ban when the virus is already ubiquitous.
Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, also sent a letter warning the White House that imposing travel restrictions on Florida would be “brutal and bad for the economy.
Rubio said, “Imposing a travel ban, or any restrictions on movement between states, would be an insolent, authoritarian move with no legal or scientific basis.”
In a Twitter post, he said Biden warned last year that “a ban on travel from anywhere won’t work.”
About a year ago, when former President Trump considered curbing the spread of the Chinese Communist virus by banning domestic travel, Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo blasted all federal restrictions, saying they were a “declaration of war on the states.” Trump has since concluded that a domestic travel ban is unnecessary.
