Germany ready to admit 50 Belarusian oppositionists as soon as possible

On Thursday, February 11, the German government announced that Germany is ready to admit 50 anti-Lukashenko Belarusian opposition figures into the country as soon as possible.

The German Foreign and Interior Ministries said that they have taken a joint initiative to confront the “extremely serious cases of politically persecuted individuals from Belarus who, together with their families, can be admitted to Germany” and that “these people must start coming to Germany as soon as possible”. But at the same Time stressed that there is no such thing as a “group entry”, and that the situation of each individual case needs to be checked. The German government said it has decided to accept up to 50 politically persecuted people, as well as their families, and continues to call on Belarus to release all political prisoners.

Germany is one of the countries that do not currently endorse Lukashenko’s re-election as president of Belarus. On Thursday, Belarusian President Lukashenko announced in front of his supporters that he had defeated a foreign “blitzkrieg” against his regime and his opponents, and announced the postponement of the constitutional reforms he had previously promised to carry out.
