Reuters: U.S. considers more sensitive technology export restrictions to China, tariffs will not be removed

A senior U.S. administration official said Wednesday that the Biden administration will consider working with allies to add “new, targeted restrictions” on exports of certain sensitive technologies to China, Reuters reported.

The official made the remarks at a briefing on Biden’s position on China before Biden’s first call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the report said. The official said the U.S. will not move to lift trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on China until there are “intense consultations and assessments” with allies.

President Joe Biden announced the same day at the Pentagon that the Defense Department will establish a new China task force to address the “growing challenge” from China. Biden stressed that how to deal with China requires a whole-of-government effort, bipartisan cooperation in Congress and strong alliances and partnerships that will ensure that the American people win in future competition.

The Pentagon’s China Working Group is said to focus on China strategy, covering a number of key areas such as intelligence, science and technology and military deployments.
