Bombardier (BBD.A / BBD.B) has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 1,600 employees; the group stresses that this is a necessary action as it continues to fight the effects of the Epidemic.
Quebec-based Bombardier said that in addition to cutting 1,600 employees, it plans to stop production of Learjet aircraft later in 2021 in order to focus on its higher-margin Challenger and Global aircraft.
Bombardier said the latest reductions, combined with earlier restructuring measures and the spin-off of the wire interconnection systems business in Queretaro, Mexico, are expected to reduce the Group’s global workforce to approximately 13,000 by the end of 2021.
President and Chief Executive Officer Eric Martel said that the decision to reduce the workforce was very difficult and that the Group regrets to see talented employees leaving the company.
Bombardier also said that, in the long term, it will continue to provide full support to the Learjet team, which is launching a remanufacturing program for Learjet 40 and Learjet 45 aircraft called Learjet Racer, which will be offered through a service center in Wichita, Kansas, USA.
