Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik (D-Mich.), far right, speaks.
U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (D-Mich.) commented Wednesday, Feb. 10, in response to Trump‘s second impeachment that Democrats are once again abusing their favorite constitutional provision – impeachment – as a political weapon against former President Trump (R-Texas). She argued that this impeachment is not only divisive and hypocritical like the first Time, but also unconstitutional, while reflecting the Democrats’ double standard.
Stefaniak published this opinion piece on FoxNews.com. She said that Democrats have made numerous statements that incite violence without being condemned, and this time their behavior against Trump is a complete double standard.
She said that in order to finally disqualify his political opposition and silence him permanently, Democrats are abusing the power of impeachment. By doing so, they want to prevent American citizens from having the right to run for public office in the future. “This unprecedented and dangerous action transforms 150 years of impeachment precedent into another partisan political maneuver.”
Ken Starr, a former independent investigator, said that under the Articles of Impeachment, the Constitution requires that “the President may be removed from office by impeachment… ……” and the answer is literally there. President Trump is no longer in office, so the Senate can’t remove him.
Starr thinks the Democrats made a Hollywood blockbuster, but that’s not the point. “This practice sets a very bad precedent. People who leave office are not supposed to be impeached, otherwise, Obama & Hillary, both have to be ready for possible impeachment at any time?” He said it was not a threat, just a prediction of what might happen in the future in terms of what he saw in front of him.
Democrats say the impeachment is intended to punish Trump for allegedly inciting violence. “But instantly the weakest point of their case was revealed,” Stefanik said, “when Democrats shamelessly edited the video of President Trump’s Jan. 6 speech, but removed the line where Trump said to use the words ‘peacefully and patriotically express your voice ‘ that phrase.”
Stefaniak said the American people remember that this is not the first time the Democratic impeachment team has selectively been editing evidence. “It harkens back to Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) infamous misdeed of fabricating transcripts of Trump’s phone calls with Russian President Zelenski in his last impeachment.”
Stefaniuk also wrote: “President Trump, the White House staff and members of both Republican chambers, including myself, immediately at that time had already harshly condemned the perpetrators of the violence and tragic loss of Life inside the U.S. Capitol, and we demanded that they be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
At the same time, however, Democrats have refused to condemn, punish or impeach members of their own party, she added. “They have been on record of encouraging their own supporters to use violence and have repeatedly failed to condemn violence after it has occurred. And that’s a complete double standard.”
She also said that when violent left-wing anarchists carried out an ongoing attack on a federal courthouse in Portland, Oregon, House Speaker Pelosi did not call it a rebellion. Pelosi called the federal law enforcement officers protecting the building “storm troopers. And when violent mobs destroy public property, Pelosi added, “People will do what they have to do.”
Stefanik also referenced Massachusetts Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey, who said last year, “Yes, America is burning, but that’s the way the forest grows.” Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Presley (D) also said, “Whenever there is unrest in our lives, there has to be unrest in the streets.”
In addition, she mentioned that Vice President Kamala Harris (D-California), when she was a senator, also urged supporters to donate to a fund that helps violent rioters and arsonists get out of jail on bail. Then she said of the violent demonstrations, “People need to beware. They’re not going to stop before election day in November, they’re not going to stop after election day …… They’re not going to let it go, and they shouldn’t do that.”
Stefanik also reminded people not to forget what Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California, had said as well. Waters has shouted through a megaphone to supporters, “Let’s make sure we show up where we have to, and if you see anyone in (Trump’s) cabinet in a restaurant or a department store or a gas station, you go out and create a protest crowd and squeeze them. And you tell them that they’re no longer welcome anywhere.”
Waters later went even further on MSNBC when she said, “The people will reject them. They will protest. They will harass them completely.” Stefanik argued that all of the above Democrats’ words and actions were undoubtedly blatant incitements to violence against Trump Administration officials, yet they were never warned by their Democratic colleagues.
Stepanek said the United States is facing some of the most significant challenges in its history – an unprecedented plague pandemic, an economic crisis and deep social divisions. “And impeachment will do absolutely nothing to solve these problems and bring the American people together. In fact, the Democrats’ hunger for impeachment will only divide us further.”
She argued that the Senate should quickly reject the articles of impeachment because they are unconstitutional. “This country must not set a precedent by treating former public servants, including the president, this way, subjecting them to political persecution even after they have completed their terms. We must focus our time and energy on delivering real results for the American people.”
