Bomb Attack on Veterans Day Event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Three Injured

According to an official statement, at least three people were injured when a bomb exploded at a Veterans Day commemoration attended by foreigners at a non-Muslim cemetery in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Wednesday (11 November).

The event commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the end of the First World War. The homemade bomb exploded as the French consul was finishing his speech. The area where the incident took place and the road leading to the cemetery have been blocked since the attack. Saudi authorities are investigating the attack.

State media reported that the injured included a Greek consulate employee and a Saudi security officer. The British government said the third person injured was a British citizen. All three were said to be in relatively minor condition.

The embassies of France, the United States, Britain, Italy and Greece issued a joint statement condemning the attack, calling it “disgraceful and totally unjustified”.

France, which has suffered a number of attacks in recent weeks, also called on Saudi authorities to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Last month, a security guard was injured in a stabbing incident at the French consulate in Jeddah. The suspect, a Saudi man, has been arrested. In October, France has been attacked by foreign-born Muslims, once in Paris where a teacher was beheaded and another in Nice where three people were killed.

It was unclear whether Wednesday’s attack targeted French officials.
