Australia updates its travel police on Hong Kong to remind Hong Kong people with dual Chinese and Australian citizenship to change their nationality

The Australian government on Wednesday (10) updated the travel alert for Hong Kong, saying that Hong Kong no longer recognizes dual nationality, suggesting that nationals with Chinese and Australian citizenship who wish to be treated as Australian citizens in Hong Kong should apply to the Immigration Department for a change of nationality.

The Australian government has earlier listed mainland China and Hong Kong as “do not visit”, the warning level has not changed. The latest dual citizenship alert reminds Australians that with the implementation of the Chinese Nationality Act in Hong Kong, the HKSAR no longer recognizes dual citizenship and those with dual Chinese and Australian citizenship who wish to be treated as Australian citizens need to register with the Immigration Department to declare their change of nationality.

The warning continues that if the Hong Kong government considers the dual citizen concerned to be a Chinese citizen, it may deny the person concerned access to Australian consular services, even if he is using an Australian passport or a passport of another country at the Time of entry. Dual nationals who have not renounced their Chinese nationality and continue to hold SAR or Chinese passports will be considered Chinese nationals. A warning reminds nationals planning to enter mainland China or Hong Kong to enter with an Australian passport.
