Former U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday (9), the Senate began the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, and Republican senators sent a clear signal right at the beginning of the impeachment trial that Trump will be found not guilty for the second Time.
On the first day of the trial, 44 of the 50 Republican senators said the impeachment trial was unconstitutional, and while it failed to prevent the trial from proceeding, it showed that only a small percentage of Republican senators supported convicting Trump.
North Dakota Republican Senator Kevin Cramer predicted that the number of Republicans who voted to declare the impeachment trial unconstitutional would be the “floor” for a vote to acquit Trump at the final trial. There is absolutely no way there will be enough votes to convict Trump.
Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley (R) said he would be “very surprised” if many Republican senators flip-flopped before the final vote, and he doesn’t believe impeachment efforts will make any headway.
The House impeachment manager played a shocking video Tuesday in an attempt to influence Republican senators. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Mississippi, said the House impeachment manager was working harder than the first time he impeached Trump, but it wasn’t enough to change his mind – that impeachment is unconstitutional.
Indiana Republican Sen. Mike Braun (R) speculated that the margin was a good predictor of the final vote on whether to convict Trump. Asked if Tuesday’s result could be seen as a good indicator of how the trial will end, Braun said, “I think so.”
Braun also added, “I don’t think we’re going to lose again.”
In an interview with Texas radio station KSKY on Tuesday, Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) called the trial a “political exercise” and “it really looks like a terrible retaliation, and I think It’s totally unnecessary” and “we know what the outcome will be.
It is expected that the impeachment process could end as soon as Sunday or next Monday.
