Alibaba and Tencent are hiring legal and compliance experts in a big way to deal with authorities’ regulation

In response to the recent unprecedented anti-monopoly and data privacy trails being conducted by Chinese authorities, major Chinese technology companies such as Alibaba and Tencent are hiring legal and compliance experts and setting aside funds for potential fines.

Citing sources and recruitment ads, Reuters said that companies including Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan, Baidu and ByteDance are all hiring legal and compliance experts.

According to recruiting information on the companies’ websites, Alibaba is currently hiring 69 legal and compliance professionals, including about six positions dedicated to competition, compliance and data privacy, while Tencent and Meituan have each proposed hiring a dozen legal and compliance personnel in the past few months.

Alibaba also responded to the reports, denying that the new hires are in response to recent regulatory changes, saying the company regularly recruits to support its business, while Tencent and ByteDance had no comment, and Meituan and Baidu have yet to respond.
