On Wednesday (Feb. 10), Bloomberg reported that Jack Ma had recently been practicing golf in Hainan, citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss non-public information, Ma has been playing at Hainan’s Red Canyon Sanya Golf Club in recent weeks. It’s a secluded 27-hole course with beautiful scenery near the southern tip of Hainan Island.
The report said it was the first Time Ma had been seen since a live video conference with a group of rural teachers on Jan. 20. The news helped play down speculation that Ma could be detained, though speculation continues to fester about his status within the Communist Party as regulators overhaul his expanding business footprint.
Alibaba shares rose 1.3 percent at one point in U.S. pre-market trading on the news.
Another positive clue about Ma came from SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, one of Alibaba’s earliest investors who has had a long association with him, Bloomberg reported.
On Monday, when he released SoftBank’s quarterly earnings report, Masayoshi Son said he had been in touch with Ma. For Ma to go, Sun did not mention, but said Ma likes painting, chatting has been sharing his work.
Representatives of Ant Group, Alibaba and Red Canyon Sanya Golf Club would not comment on the news that Ma was practicing at a Hainan golf course.
