AFP reported that Burmese officials declared martial law in seven towns in the second largest city of Wa, banning protests and gatherings of more than five people and imposing a curfew from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
As a wave of disobedience spreads across the country in increasingly bold ways, state-run Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) warned on Aug. 8 that opposition the military takeover of the government is illegal and signaled a possible crackdown.
