Lithuania’s new ruling coalition pledged on Monday to support Taiwan’s “fight for freedom”.
According to Reuters, the leaders of the Lithuanian Land Coalition, the Freedom Movement and the Freedom Party co-signed the Lithuanian coalition agreement on Monday, which won 74 seats in the 141-seat parliament on Oct. 25, and the signed agreement will require the new government to pursue a “values-based foreign policy.
The protocol says: “We will actively oppose any violations of human rights and democratic freedoms and will defend people fighting for freedom all over the world, from Belarus to Taiwan.”
The outgoing Lithuanian government has no objections to Beijing’s “One China” policy. Nonetheless, China protested in May after Lithuania said Taiwan should be allowed to serve as a World Health Organization observer during the neo-crown pandemic.
Lithuania’s relations with China were hit hard in 2013 when former President Dalia Grybauskaite met with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in Vilnius.
