Moscow court: Navalny violates probation conditions, sentenced to 3.5 years in prison

A Moscow court today ruled that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny violated the terms of his probation and sentenced him to 3 1/2 years in prison, although the Time he spent under house arrest will count toward his sentence, so he will actually serve less time.

Navalny’s allies have called on supporters to immediately go to central Moscow to protest the sentence. Navalny’s lawyer said he would appeal.

Navalny’s arrest upon his return from Germany last month sparked nationwide demonstrations and a massive police crackdown.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Moscow and other cities over the past two weekends to protest the arrest of Navalny, a 44-year-old anti-corruption campaigner.

Navalny was sentenced in 2014 to 3 1/2 years in prison and received a suspended sentence.
