Study: More than 50% of infected patients still have difficulty breathing 4 months after discharge from hospital 17% develop trauma syndrome

Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) exceeded 100 million diagnosed cases worldwide, and a new study shows that more than 50% of patients with severe disease still have breathing difficulties and other symptoms four months after being discharged from the hospital, and 17% of patients develop post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD).

In a study published Wednesday (27), Italian researchers found that more than 50 percent of patients with severe infections still had not fully recovered their lung function four months after discharge from the hospital, and 6 percent of them had the same lung status as during their severe illness.

This indicates that many patients with severe disease are recovering slowly, with nearly 50 percent of those infected still very weak four months after discharge from the hospital and unable to perform even simple daily activities such as getting up from a chair and walking tests, the researchers said.

In addition, 17% of the patients developed post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) and reported continuous Nightmares and negative thoughts. As previous studies have also pointed out that some of the infected patients subsequently developed symptoms of mental illness, the academic community expects more studies to further understand the impact of this disease on the psychological state of patients.
