California’s famous Big Sur Highway 1 section collapsed down a 100-foot cliff

Big Sur (Big Sur) a section of picturesque Highway 1, north and south two lanes are collapsed, a large part of the cliffs are missing, falling hundreds of feet below the sea.

Three consecutive days of heavy rains have caused a serious collapse of a section of Highway 1 in the scenic Big Sur area south of San Jose, with large sections of the road all falling hundreds of feet below the cliff. The state Department of Transportation is already working on repairs, but it is not known when it will reopen.

The collapsed section is located between Big Sur and San Luis Obispo County (San Luis Obispo), and Rat Creek is nearby. Like most of Central California’s Highway 1, it’s picturesque, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and mountains on the other, and the highway built on top of a mid-air cliff.

The state Department of Transportation says the northbound and southbound lanes are gone, all falling off the cliff to the ocean below. Due to the extent of the damage, I do not know when to repair, engineers have been to the site to study, and then only to set a schedule for rebuilding.

Engineers said people familiar with the history of Highway 1 know that the highway can collapse with every heavy rain, and a heavy rain in 2017 also caused a serious collapse that closed the highway for nearly a year.
