South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem noted Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that during the 2000 election, former Vice President Al Gore had 37 days to file a legal challenge to the election process. As a result, she said, we should “give the same consideration to the 70.6 million Americans who voted for President Trump.
She said in an interview that it’s too early to conclude who won the election, because we haven’t finished counting the votes. There are a number of states that have not been declared yet, and Al Gore was given the opportunity to appear in court back in 2000. We should give President Trump his day in court. Let this legal process unfold, because, we live in a republic.
She said, “The power of our government comes from the consent of the governed. That’s the people. They give their consent on election day. Election day needs to be fair, honest and transparent, and we need to make sure we have an honest election before we decide who’s going to be in the White House for the next four years.”
Noem, when asked if there was evidence of election fraud, said, “People have signed legal documents, affidavits, stating that they saw illegal activity. That’s why we need to have the conversation in court. The New York Times itself has said there was a clerical error.”
“If you look at what happened in Michigan, we had a computer glitch. You look at Pennsylvania, dead people voted in Pennsylvania. I don’t know how widespread it is. I don’t know if it’s going to change the outcome of the election. But why are people so afraid of having a fair election and finding out the facts?”
“We gave Al Gore 37 days to run the process before we decided who would be president. Why can’t we give the same consideration to the 70.6 million Americans who voted for President Trump?”
Gov. Noem went on to add, “If Joe Biden really wanted to unify this country, he would have waited and made sure that we could prove that we had a fair election.”
“Look at all these uncertainties we have now.”
“There are more states at play this time. I think it’s interesting that some people are making statements that this is a landslide victory for Joe Biden. It’s not, because there are a lot of states that are still in play. All I’m asking is that we don’t undermine this country. When you undermine the process by which we elect our leaders, you undermine America forever.”
“So it’s not just about this one election, it’s about every election to come. And the fact of the matter is that the American people, the people who are getting up every day, who are suffering from this pandemic, the people who have tragically lost their families, they need to at least know – at least America is still functioning, and we care about doing the right thing.”
She ended the interview by saying, “Let’s get the (legal challenge) process up and running, and it will present evidence.”
