The air cabs we once saw in Science Fiction may be coming to fruition, as the United Kingdom announced on Jan. 28 that it will build the world’s first urban skyport to provide a platform for cargo Drones and electric air cabs.
The London-based “City AirPort” company said the British government is funding $1.6 million in the Future of Flight Challenge program to build the world’s first urban air port on the outskirts of Coventry, England. -Air One”.
It will be the smallest airport ever built and will allow cargo drones, as well as air cabs, to take off and land and provide charging services. It is expected to be completed in November 2021.
“Ricky Sandhu, founder and executive chairman of Urban AirPort: “We have airports for planes, train stations for trains, and roads for cars, and this new type of transportation – urban air transportation – needs its own base to support it. It needs its own base to support it.”
According to the introduction, this looks a bit like a flying saucer “air one”, is a “pop-up” elevated platform, air cab landing on the top, the platform will move down to the hangar. The air cab is then pushed to different parts of the site to carry new cargo or passengers; it can also be charged, cleaned and maintained.
The hangar of “Air One” is also equipped with a cafe, a library, a waiting room with a large screen and so on. It is a small but complete facility.
At present, the “city air port” company has cooperated with a British drone company to promote large-scale drone delivery services. In addition, City AirPort has also established links with Hyundai’s Urban Air Transport Division, which is preparing to launch the eVTOL, an electric aircraft with vertical lift, in 2028.
In the future, the UK will establish several urban airports, just like bus stations, for the convenience of the public.
