Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Calif.), whose district is along the U.S.-Mexico border, said in a statement that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) has ordered the ongoing construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall to stop by the end of Jan. 26 and all construction workers to leave the border zone, according to an executive order from President Biden.
The former Trump administration had received billions of dollars to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall to block illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central and South America from entering the United States. In the past four years, about 450 miles of border wall were built. Former President Trump traveled to Texas on Jan. 12 before leaving office to inspect the U.S.-Mexico border wall in the Alamo region.
Mark Morgan, former acting director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told the Breitbart News that about 5,000 construction jobs would be lost by halting construction of the border wall, and that about 270,000 tons of steel-posted fencing had been produced and not yet assembled.
Within hours of his inauguration on Jan. 20, President Biden signed an executive order halting construction of the southern border wall. In the order, Biden wrote: “It is the policy of my administration to no longer divert American taxpayer dollars from the construction of the border wall, and I also direct that all resources used or diverted for the construction of the southern border wall will be carefully reviewed.”
Alejandro Mayorkas, the Biden Administration‘s nominee for homeland security secretary, said during his Senate confirmation hearing Jan. 19 that he has not yet studied what to do with the border wall that has been built, including the possibility of removing parts of it.
