Siblings to fight against each other, will be separate prosecution and defense representatives for Lai Chi Ying case

One Media founder Lai Chi-ying, Democratic Party founding chairman Lee Chu-ming and eight others were charged with organizing and participating in an unlawful assembly in Victoria Park in August of last year, and the latest news is that the Hong Kong Department of Justice will hire senior barrister Yu Ruohai as the lead prosecutor. His sister, senior barrister Audrey Eu, will represent Lai Chi-ying in the case, meaning that the two siblings may fight against each other in court.

This is not the first Time the two siblings have faced each other in court. In 2016, Audrey Eu and Yu Ruohai represented Yao Songyan and the SAR government respectively in the Hong Kong Legislative Council oath case, and they went head-to-head in court, showing no mercy. Audrey Eu is the former leader of the Hong Kong Civic Party and is a veteran democrat in Hong Kong. And Yu Ruohai has represented the Hong Kong government in different judicial review cases in recent years, including the bill to ban hooded faces and the Ding Power case.

The case will be heard on February 16, early Friday, the Department of Justice originally appointed David Perry QC to be the lead prosecutor in Hong Kong, which attracted criticism from British public opinion. The British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Raab, criticized David Perry for taking over the case, giving the impression of mercenary, saying he did not understand how anyone could handle the case “with conscience”.

The Department of Justice later announced the appointment of a new chief prosecutor, saying that David Perry faced pressure and criticism from the British community.
