Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) continues to ravage the world, with the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Indonesia surpassing one million and hospitals in severely affected areas reaching their maximum patient intake.
The Indonesian Ministry of health announced today (26) that 13,094 new cases have been confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Indonesia to 1,012,350 and 28,468 deaths, the highest number of confirmed cases among Southeast Asian countries.
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, with a total population of 270 million. Recently, President Joko Widodo took the lead in administering the vaccine produced in China and gave priority to two-thirds of the population, including high-risk groups, health care workers, military, police, teachers, etc.
Indonesian officials say that with a total of more than 17,000 islands and a wide distribution, coupled with limited infrastructure for transportation, 15 percent of the vaccine may be wasted in the distribution process, so Indonesia needs up to 427 million doses of vaccine.
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, remains the city with the worst outbreak, with more than 254,000 confirmed cases as of today (26th), including 4,077 deaths. Of the city’s 8,066 beds, only 8.5 percent have been reserved for new patients, and beds with respirators are already full.
The most densely populated island of Java, including the provinces of West and East Java and the city of Yogyakarta, has also seen bed occupancy rates as high as 95 percent over the past few weeks. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the country’s hospital capacity has reached 70%.
