The House has submitted articles of impeachment against Trump to the Senate, and the chief justice will not preside over the formal trial, which will begin within 2 weeks.

U.S. media Breitbart News reported Monday (Jan. 25) that the House impeachment director served an article of impeachment to the Senate on the same day, and that the official trial of the impeachment case will not begin until the week of Feb. 8, but the service of the impeachment papers marked the beginning of the second impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump.

As is customary, the nine members of the Impeachment Management Team walked in two lines to escort the impeachment papers through the Statuary Hall and Capitol Rotunda to personally deliver them to the Senate. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-CA), head of the impeachment management team, also read the articles of impeachment aloud on the Senate floor.

A conviction of Trump would require a 2/3 vote in the Senate, which means 17 Republicans would need to vote in favor of convicting Trump in addition to all Democrats and two independents. If convicted, a second vote to prevent Trump from running for president again would require only a simple majority of 51 votes to pass.

It was reported Monday that Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) will preside over the impeachment trial, not Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts, because it is not the sitting president who is being tried.
