A person familiar with the matter told the 21st Century Business Herald that Huawei is exploring the divestiture of cell phones, the subject is its Shanghai terminal-related departments, Huawei’s high-end series Mate and P research and development is mainly located in Shanghai. It is reported that, in addition to cell phones, other products such as tablets or sold together, leaving only the Heisi and base station business.

Meanwhile, there are also media reports that Huawei is in talks with a consortium led by a Shanghai government-backed company over the sale of its high-end smartphone brands P and MATE, which has been going on for months, triggered by a shortage of chip supply.

According to TrendForce’s Semiconductor Research Division, the top six global brands in 2020 are Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo in that order, with the biggest difference in Huawei’s market share change compared to 2019.

However, on January 25, Huawei Terminal told the 21st Century Business Herald, “Huawei has absolutely no plans to sell its cell phone business. Huawei will persist in building the world’s leading high-end smartphone brand and strive to provide consumers with superior product experience and service.”

Looking ahead to 2021, TrendForce predicts that the global smartphone industry is expected to warm up with the increasingly stable lifestyle. Through the cyclical demand for replacement phones and demand support from emerging markets, total annual production is expected to grow to 1.36 billion units, an annual growth of 9%.

TrendForce estimates based on the current situation, Huawei’s annual production performance in 2021 by the ban and the new Glory split event, the ranking fell to 7th, the global top 6 in order for Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Transsion, the above six will cover nearly 80% of the global market share, but the Epidemic and the international situation of uncertainty, coupled with the shortage of foundry capacity, the future direction of the smartphone industry is still variable.
