SpaceX, a small satellite “carpool” program designed to reduce costs, launched 143 satellites from Florida into space on a Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday morning local Time, breaking the record for the highest number of satellites launched in a single trip, according to U.S. technology media TheVerge.

The mission, called Transporter-1, will open up a potentially lucrative line of business for SpaceX. The company launched its small-satellite “carpool” program in 2019, which essentially “rideshare” multiple satellites of different shapes and sizes on a rocket. The program offers a relatively inexpensive service for small satellite companies to get into space, starting at 485 pounds and $1 million.
