An experienced sniper from the British Army Special Forces killed five militants from the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) with a single shot from about a kilometer away during a mission in Syria last year, reducing the number of casualties that could have resulted from those militants.
The sniper was a sergeant in the British Army Airborne Task Force (SAS) and had 20 years of relevant experience, the Daily Star reported.
Last November, the sniper and other SAS members were in Syria on a “kill or capture” mission against IS members. They monitored a suspected bomb factory for several days before spotting five people leaving the building, one of whom was wearing a suicide undershirt.
The sniper was given authorization to snipe after contacting the base. He fired from a distance of 3,000 feet (914 meters) with a .50-caliber sniper rifle made by Barrett (USA), hitting the IS member in the chest with one shot and detonating the bomb, killing him along with four others, including a senior commander.
A source noted that they had intended to kill the IS member wearing the suicide undershirt first and then his commander. Snipers typically shoot such suicide bombers in the head.
However, the suicide bomber was at maximum range and had reached the sniper’s firing limit. The sniper shot the suicide bomber in the center of mass, or chest, after adjusting for wind speed and other factors, which detonated the bomb, killing all those IS members.
The source said the sniper was given a baseball cap with the words “Long Range Death” written on it after he returned to base.
These terrorists are scared to death of snipers,” the source said. We use silencers on our sniper rifles, which significantly reduce the noise. They can’t see or hear us. They only knew we were around when the bodies started falling to the ground.
