The Breitbart News reports that New Mexico voted for Biden and now regrets it.
New Mexico voted for Joe Biden in November, giving five electoral votes to the Democratic candidate. Today, however, the state is appalled by incoming President Biden’s 60-day suspension of oil and gas leases.
As Breitbart News reported, Biden’s call for a “transition away from the oil industry” during the campaign raised alarm in New Mexico, causing then-Rep. Xochitl Torres Small (D-NM) to distance herself from Biden’s position. She later lost to Republican Yvette Herrell in her race to represent the state’s 2nd Congressional District. New Mexico is “one of the top 10 energy-producing states in the U.S. With 7 percent of U.S. oil reserves, it is the third-largest oil-producing state and has enjoyed rapid growth in recent years.” However, the state voted for Biden anyway.
Today, many are expressing regret, according to the Associated Press on Jan. 22.
“Joe Biden’s 60-day moratorium on new oil and gas leasing and drilling permits has caused widespread concern in New Mexico, where spending on Education and other public programs depends on the industry’s success.
Republican leaders in the state, as well as local leaders in border communities in the Permian Basin, the richest region in the U.S., say any move to make the moratorium permanent would be damaging to the state’s economy. Half of New Mexico’s production occurs on federal lands, and royalties amount to hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
…
Members of Congress from other western states have also raised concerns, saying the ripple effects of the moratorium would hurt small businesses already struggling because of the pandemic.
Industry groups say the order effectively brings to a halt all regulatory activity, from routine requests that arise in the normal course of business to right-of-way requests for new pipelines designed to gather more natural gas as part of efforts to reduce emissions and flaring – something Democrats have done in the fight against climate change.”
The Biden Administration did not explain how a clampdown on a key part of the nation’s energy will help an economy still struggling to recover from the effects of the coronavirus (CCA virus) pandemic. Biden has issued other directives that will hurt the energy industry, including his decision to revoke the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline. Biden pledged to take out the pipeline last May, and the Pipefitters and Pipeline Installers Association of America, which voiced support for Biden in August, is now complaining.
