Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was arrested on his return to Moscow on the 17th, sparking a wave of demonstrations across Russia today (23rd) demanding his release, and Navalny issued a “non-suicide statement” on IG yesterday, thanking people for planning solidarity for him.
According to The Moscow Times, Navalny’s first message to the public after his arrest yesterday was a statement that he would not commit suicide, saying he was mentally and emotionally stable and would handle his stress properly, ruling out the possibility of a heart attack.
Navalny issued a non-suicide statement as a precaution, saying, “I will go up and down the stairs carefully, handle my stress properly and rule out the possibility of a sudden heart attack, and I am currently in a mentally and emotionally stable state.”
Navalny also thanked his supporters, saying that solidarity outside the prison would be helpful to him. Navalny noted that a number of young Russians have promoted the protest through TikTok and have also replaced President Poutin’s portrait in the classroom with his picture. He said posts with the hashtags “#freeNavalny” and “#23January” have received more than 200 million views on TikTok.
Navalny accused Putin of masterminding his poisoning last year and said he was jailed for political reasons. Several European leaders have now asked Russia to release him.
