Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is expected to propose that Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) begin an impeachment trial against President Trump in February, according to Breitbart News.
That would give impeachment managers and Trump defenders at least a week to prepare, according to CBS News. McConnell made the offer to Republican senators during a policymaking conference call Thursday. It’s unclear what date in February McConnell proposed. He has said he would not hold a trial immediately after the House impeaches Mr. Trump, and Democrats now control the Senate …. The House has yet to send the single article of impeachment for sedition to the Senate.
The report comes after McConnell accused Trump of instigating the recent riot at the U.S. Capitol in which five people, including a police officer, died.” The mob was fed lies. They are provoked by the president and other powerful people who try to use fear and violence to stop a particular program …… They don’t like to do that,” McConnell said in a speech on the Senate floor.” But we pressed on. We stood together and said that an angry mob will not get a veto over the rule of law in our country.”
McConnell said he has not yet decided how he will vote in the upcoming trial, though some reports say he may have trouble retaining his longtime leadership position if he chooses to convict former President Trump.
According to CNN, an unnamed senior Republican senator said, “If he does, I don’t know if he’ll be able to continue as a leader.” . The lawmaker told the news outlet that “several of his colleagues hold similar views and asked not to be named to discuss sensitive internal politics.”
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said he could no longer support McConnell as Senate leader if he voted to convict the former president.
“No, no, no,” Johnson said when asked.” I don’t even think we should have a trial.”
