Shanghai officials today (Jan. 21) reported three new confirmed cases and classified the area in question as a medium-risk area. The Voice of Hope reporter was informed that the streets in the area have been cordoned off and neighborhood residents have been pulled away for isolation.

At today’s press conference on the prevention and control of the Epidemic in Shanghai, Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai health Care Commission, said that three local confirmed cases were reported in Shanghai. The residential area of Zhaotong Road in Huangpu District (the area south of Fuzhou Road) is classified as a medium-risk area.

A commercial worker in the area told the station that their street is closed and they may be pulled away for quarantine. “This side of the street are closed, we can not get out outside people can not enter, is because the epidemic is serious, are doing nucleic acid testing ah. We may all be pulled away to quarantine, quarantine 14 days.”

Staff at a hotel in the area said three new cases appeared in a nearby hospital, and they are all under quarantine. “Because we are now a medium-risk area, there is no way to receive guests. We have found 3 cases on our side, in a hospital in this area on our side, because it’s closer to us, so we are also enforcing quarantine on our side, and we are still waiting for a response from the top. So we can not receive for the Time being, and we this area has been closed, and have to wait for the results.”

The staff said that the residents of the nearby neighborhoods were pulled away from the isolation, “the neighborhoods behind us were pulled away from the isolation.”

The video circulating online shows a large number of public security personnel and vehicles on the street, as well as staff in protective clothing.

The area is close to the west hospital of Shanghai Renji Hospital, which earlier today was officially notified of a suspected case.

Officials did not say whether the confirmed case was related to the suspected case at the hospital. The actual number of confirmed cases is not yet known, as the Chinese Communist Party has consistently concealed the outbreak.
