Acting Secretary of Defense Issues Statement on National Guard Support in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller issued a statement on National Guard support in Washington, D.C.

“As is customary for military assistance to large security events, the Department of Defense will be vetting National Guard members in Washington, D.C. While we have no intelligence of an insider threat, we will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to secure the capital. This type of review is normally conducted by law enforcement during a major security incident. However, in this case, the scope of military involvement is unique. The D.C. National Guard is also providing additional training to service members arriving in Washington, D.C., that if they see or hear something inappropriate, they should report it to their chain of command. We thank the FBI for its support in assisting with this mission and the more than 25,000 National Guardsmen who answered the nation’s call and deployed quickly to the National Capital Region.”
