Comments about electric car batteries by the chairman of Communist Party state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group were rebutted on the spot by mainland professionals.
Recently, the chairman of Communist Party of China state-owned enterprise Guangzhou Automobile Group said publicly that he would develop and mass-produce electric car batteries with fast charging and high range. The statement was refuted by professionals on the spot, stating that it could not be reached with the current technology.
At the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum (2021) on January 16, Zeng Qinghong, chairman of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., said, “After three years of continuous development by Guangzhou Automobile’s battery self-research team, the graphene-based super fast-charging battery has now entered the real vehicle testing stage. The graphene-based battery can be charged to 80% in 8 minutes at the fastest and has a range of 650 km. We hope to have full mass production by the end of the year.”
He added: “GAC is also developing a new battery that combines silicon anode materials with an energy density of 280 watt-hours/kg and a range of 1,000 kilometers.”
However, at the forum, Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice chairman of the China Electric Vehicle Council of 100, said, “If someone tells you that this car can run 1,000 kilometers and can be fully charged in a few minutes, it is also very safe and the cost is very low. With the current technology, he must be a liar.”
GAC is a Communist Party state-owned enterprise, and its chairman, Zeng Qinghong, also serves as secretary of the group’s party committee.
The day before, Guangzhou Automobile Group’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Guangzhou Automobile Eyan, released a poster teaser about the new power battery technology, which showed the words “80% full in 8 minutes,” “monthly charging era,” “makes charging as convenient as refueling,” “no need to wait until next year,” and “soon to be equipped with mass production.”
According to the analysis of professionals quoted by the mainland auto industry’s self-publisher “Discovery Auto”, the data given by GAC Group is not advanced technology, and there are loopholes, as the group did not specify the charging time for the battery cells or the battery pack, nor the size of the battery pack.
Battery problems persist for mainland electric vehicles, including those involving safety and range.
The mainland media reported on Jan. 18 that since the beginning of winter this year, some net car passengers complained that the driver did not turn on the warm air conditioner, and the driver said that the electric car “dropped power” seriously in winter, and the range was reduced by about 30% to 40% when the warm air was turned on for ten minutes.
Some net car drivers said, now driving (electric) car is either on the way to charge, or on the way to find a charging pile; and drivers said, electric car in the garage overnight, they will be “power off”, the northern outdoor electric car after a night even the door can not open.
In addition, the mainland electric car spontaneous combustion incidents continue. Following the occurrence of many last year, two more occurred in Hangzhou and Shandong Heze City on January 5 and 13 this year, respectively. Among them, in a spontaneous combustion incident at 5:00 a.m. in an underground garage in Hangzhou on January 5, the vehicle burned and the smoke rushed straight to the 6th floor, a very dangerous scene.
In February 2020, William Evanina, director of the Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, publicly stated that the two main focuses of Chinese (commercial) espionage are the theft of U.S. aircraft technology and electric vehicle technology.
