As President Trump leaves office, Trump ally Michael Ellis has become general counsel of the nation’s largest intelligence agency.
The National Security Agency (NSA) said Sunday (Jan. 17) that Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller ordered NSA Director Gen. legal counsel.
Mr. Ellis accepted his final offer of appointment yesterday afternoon,” an NSA spokesman said in a statement. The NSA is moving forward with his inauguration in place.”
Ellis, who has served as a senior assistant attorney to President Trump and an attorney for the National Security Council (NSC), was nominated as NSA general counsel last November, but the National Security Agency (NSA) has yet to appoint him to the position.
CNN reported that Acting Defense Secretary Miller recently ordered Nakasone to place him in the position, giving Nakasone a deadline of Saturday night.
The NSA general counsel position is a federal civil service position, which means it may be difficult for the Biden administration to remove Ellis.
Prior to joining the Trump administration, Ellis served as chief counsel to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). Ellis then became deputy counsel to the National Security Council, where he refused to testify in the House of Representatives’ 2019 impeachment investigation of the president, and has served as senior director of the National Security Council’s (NSC) intelligence division since March 2020.
