The Hong Kong government asks civil servants to swear allegiance to Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government issued a circular on Friday, requiring civil servants recruited before July last year to swear allegiance to Hong Kong. Public opinion is that this is apparently to combat the “anti-Hong Kong” sentiment that the “anti-China” movement has started.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Civil Service Bureau said that all civil servants appointed before July 1 last year were required to sign a declaration of support for the Basic Law, allegiance to the Hong Kong SAR and be accountable to the Hong Kong government, while those in senior positions were also required to take an oath. The Hong Kong government has previously asked civil servants appointed after July 1 last year to sign a similar declaration in advance.

The government said that if a civil servant ignores the request, the authorities will consider terminating the employment relationship in accordance with the existing mechanism, but the person concerned can plead his case.

During the “anti-China” campaign, people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, including civil servants, expressed their dissatisfaction with the Hong Kong government’s performance, and some civil servants even participated in or initiated demonstrations.
