Senate Republican leader McConnell (Mitch McConnell).
As the House of Representatives begins its agenda to impeach President Trump, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s office told Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s office on the 13th that McConnell would not agree to an early recall of the Senate to hold impeachment hearings, meaning the hearings may have to be held after Biden takes office and Trump will stay in office for his full term.
McConnell’s office spoke with Schumer’s office on the 13th and told him that McConnell would not agree to immediately reconvene the Senate, meaning that the Senate would not resume hearing the Trump impeachment case this Friday or even before January 19; McConnell spokesman Doug Andres confirmed the news on Twitter on the same day.
According to the Senate’s legislative calendar, January 7-19 is the time period for senators to return to work in their state districts. Given that President-elect Biden will be inaugurated on Wednesday the 20th, even if the House passes the presidential impeachment this week, and the Senate does not resume hearings before then, Trump will stay in office until the end of his term, and his impeachment hearings will stay until the Biden administration.
