Trump calls on Americans to help with peaceful transition: Be calm, not violent

U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) issued a statement Wednesday (Jan. 13) urging all Americans to ensure a peaceful transition by not engaging in any violent demonstrations, vandalism or lawlessness ahead of Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

“In light of reports that there will be more demonstrations, I urge that there must be no violence, no lawlessness, and no vandalism of any kind.” Trump said, “This is not something I support, and it is not something America supports. I call on all Americans to help de-escalate tensions and calm down. Thank you.”

Trump’s statement came in the form of an email from the White House press office. A White House adviser said the president wants big tech companies to help spread the message he posted urging nonviolence.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and other tech platforms have blocked or canceled Trump’s account.

Other Republicans have also called for non-violence in the wake of last Wednesday’s violence at the Capitol.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Wednesday, “Violence has no place in our politics. That’s it.”

“I fully condemn last week’s senseless violence, and I strongly reiterate the need to keep the peace in the coming weeks.” McDaniel said, “Those involved in the attack on our nation’s Capitol and those who continue to threaten violence should be identified, held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

“Let me be clear: No one with malicious intent is welcome in Washington, D.C., or any other state capital. The peaceful transition of power is one of our nation’s founding principles and is necessary for our country to move forward.” She added.

McDaniel said, “Now is the time to come together as a nation and unite in the peaceful pursuit of our shared democratic goals.”

Trump attorney Jenna Ellis said it is possible and right to support electoral integrity, the Constitution and free speech while also condemning violence. “We are a nation of laws.” She said.

Ellis’ words were a response to attempts by some on the left and the media to create a narrative that the Trump team’s support for seeking electoral integrity is support for “violence” and “disdain” for the Constitution.
