U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Announcement: Service Members Must Embrace and Defend the Constitution

U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman and Vice Chairman Mark Milley and John E. Hyte, along with the chiefs of staff of the six armed forces, issued a statement Jan. 12 saying, “As service members, we must embody the values and ideals of our nation. We embrace and defend the Constitution. Anything that undermines the constitutional process not only violates our traditions, values and oath of office, but is illegal.”

The statement, issued as a statement from the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, reads, “For nearly 250 years, the American people have trusted the U.S. Armed Forces to protect them and our Constitution. As we have done throughout our history, the U.S. military will obey the lawful orders of civilian leaders, support civilian authorities in protecting life and property, ensure public safety in accordance with the law, and remain fully committed to protecting and defending the U.S. Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The statement said, “The violent riot that occurred in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021, was a direct attack on the U.S. Congress, the Capitol and our constitutional process. We mourn the deaths of two Capitol Police officers and others associated with these unprecedented events. We have witnessed actions in the Capitol that are inconsistent with the rule of law. The right to freedom of speech and assembly does not give anyone the right to resort to violence, sedition and rebellion.”

The statement said, “As military personnel, we must embody the values and ideals of our nation. We support and defend the Constitution. Anything that undermines the constitutional process is not only contrary to our traditions, values and oath of office, it is illegal. on Jan. 20, 2021, in accordance with the Constitution, confirmed by the states and the courts, and certified by Congress, President-elect Biden will be inaugurated as our nation’s 46th Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.”

The statement said, “To our men and women deployed at home to defend our nation – always be ready, keep your eyes on the horizon and stay focused on the mission. We salute your continued service in defense of every American.”

The statement was delivered by U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman and Vice Chairman Milley and Hyten, Army Chief of Staff James C. McConville, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David H. Berger, Chief of Naval Operations Michael Gilday, Air Force Chief of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr.), Secretary of Space Operations John W. Raymond, and National Guard Bureau Chief Daniel R. Hokanson signed and released.
