Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Secretary of State Michael Pompeo held a meeting with Republican members of Congress in the House of Representatives on Jan. 8. According to the just-released meeting, Secretary Pompeo reminded members of Congress that the Chinese Communist threat is “in the door” and urged them to stand up to the Chinese Communist threat He urged members of Congress to stand up to the Communist threat and protect America and its freedoms.
According to Breitbart News, Secretary Pompeo told members of the conservative Republican Study Committee that he was aware of the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party when he was a member of Congress, but it was not until he became director of the CIA that he learned of the “scope, scale and nature” of the Chinese Communist threat and realized how close it was.
The battle is at the door today,” Pompeo said. …… Where they are today, they’re in our institutions of higher education. They’re in our high schools. They’re in our Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) clusters. They’re in our city councils and state legislatures across the United States. It’s (they’re) a deep-rooted effort that’s been going on for 50 years. Republicans and Democrats have rejected these things, and we’re starting to do it.”
Then, Pompeo said, “Not only did we do it correctly, but frankly, I think we have a certain bipartisan base that we can continue to do it.”
In addition, Pompeo noted that the Trump administration has succeeded in building a “huge coalition” with India, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and some European countries to work together against the Chinese Communist Party, and that 120 international telecommunications companies have now abandoned any Chinese technology in their systems.
It’s about the West and our philosophy,” Pompeo said. It’s not the United States versus China, and we have to understand that correctly, and we need partners and friends to come together.”
Pompeo believes the Chinese Communist threat has also changed dramatically over the past 3-4 years, saying, “A significant number of international businesses see the political risk in China differently than they did 3-4 years ago. …… There has been a fundamental shift in this area, and under Xi Jinping, the Chinese Communist Party is also different than it was 20 years ago.”
Pompeo also acknowledged to members of Congress that defeating the forces of China’s Communist regime would be financially costly, but he still urged members of Congress to put their constituents first and consider the risks of continuing to do business with China.
Pompeo said, “You all need to remind everyone that if your children and grandchildren want to live in a Western society, one that is not dominated by China’s telecommunications infrastructure and dominated by the ideas and philosophies of the Chinese Communist Party from the East, their rule of law and basic human dignity is much different than ours. There is some price to pay for this.
“Confronting them is not without cost. There’s a reason we haven’t confronted them for 50 years. for 50 years we’ve told people, ‘you can have both the fish and the bear’s paw. You can get something cheap. You can outsource our work to other places. We can allow them to do that. Don’t worry about the leverage influence they gain by having such a large supply chain. By the way, install TikTok on your phone and don’t worry about it.’
“We weren’t sure what they were doing before, and you put TikTok on your phone and your kids’ most personal personal information is in the hands of some really bad people, and that’s really too bad for Americans. They may just store the information in the cloud or on their hard drive for a while and may not use it, but centrally, the data sets that they develop will be used in some way that will put our young people at risk and will put American freedom at risk.”
Pompeo also urged members of Congress to stand up to the Chinese Communist threat, noting that India has banned about 300 apps from China and has replaced more than half of those apps in two months.
India has been able to do that against the Chinese Communist Party, and Pompeo hopes the U.S. will not treat the CCP as unchallengeable, he said: “They [the CCP] are not 10 feet (3 meters) tall, and they face great challenges. We need to use the tools that we have, the power that we have, to put real cost (pressure) on them in a way that influences their behavior in a way that can reflect our understanding of how the West must win and how the United States must protect its country.”
